Event:

Me and my group we went to an engineering event that was organized by Engineers Australia. The event took place in a Pub. A group of engineers from Engineers Australia made a presentation on the tunnel project in the M5 highway. The project is expected to open in 2020. Aaron Lippert, the project manager of the tunnel, demonstrated the process of constructing the tunnel, difficulties they faced, the geometric arrangement, all the safety precaution they built in the tunnel and the reason behind building the tunnel. Aaron started his presentation with how the tunnel will benefit all stakeholders and how it is designed to reduce traffic congestion in Sydney. The New M5 passages will run underground between Kingsgrove and St Subsides and more than twofold the limit of the M5 East hallway. Worked to the world's best structure principles, the passages will be taller, more extensive and less steep than the current M5 East passages and incorporate productive and present-day ventilation frameworks to guarantee air quality measures are met in the passages and encompassing rural areas. The New M5 will be worked with 'tunnel stubs' to help conceivable future associations with the proposed M4– M5 Connection and the proposed Southern Connector (part of Entryway toward the South venture). Building these association focuses now guarantees there is insignificant interference to the New M5 when these proposed undertakings are assembled. Key features of the New M5 will include:

● around nine kilometers of new motorway tunnels, line‐marked for two traffic lanes in each direction, and capable of accommodating up to three lanes in the future, if required

● widening and realigning the existing M5 East Motorway just east of King Georges Road

● a new interchange at St Peter's

● two new road bridges across Alexandra Canal

● enhanced and upgraded local streets near St Peters Interchange

● around14kilometresofnewandupgradedshared, pedestrian and cycle paths, including new bridges across Alexandra Canal and Campbell Road, St Peters

● motorway operations complexes, water treatment facilities, ventilation facilities, tolling infrastructure, and fire and safety systems.

Benefits of the M5:

improve connections across Sydney for businesses, cargo vehicles, transports, and workers, giving alleviation to a huge number of street clients battling in rush hour gridlock regular

● bolster improvement and development in southwest Sydney and connection this blasting zone of Sydney to the Worldwide Financial Hall around Sydney Airplane terminal, Port Natural science, and the south Sydney zone

● generously enhance the activity and strength of Sydney's motorway organize

● make an elective course to the M5 East, lessening defers when traffic occurrences or booked upkeep happens on the M5 East

● reducetrafficontheM5East, improving travel speeds for overwhelming vehicles making a trip to and from Sydney Air terminal and Port Natural science and boosting profitability

● give new chances to proceeded urban development and reestablishment in Sydney's southwest, considering the requirements of developing populaces at Erskineville (Ashmore Bequest urban restoration) and (Mascot station urban recharging)

● be taller, more extensive and less steep than the current M5 East

● result in a smoother ride for drivers, lessening outflows and enhancing air quality results.

Numerous different challenges were faced in constructing the tunnel. They faced Geometric arrangement ground and Sequencing challenges.

Geometric: They had a problem with shafts being on top due to constraints in space and they had to prepare places for future connections and shafts ended up being made at a slower pace than the tunnel.

Ground: The location of the tunnel doesn’t have sandstone benefits like all places around Sydney. Therefore, shale bands and shear zones were made to help with the construction process.

Sequencing: Supply shafts were installed to help to construct the tunnel and longer bolts were used to keep the walls standing.
